About
"It's like making pottery," says Josef Zekoff. And actually he models his pictures. Stretches and pulls, compresses and balances them into shape, pulls them out of the unformed mass of paint.
The white background of his papers is framed from the outside. At the edges you can still see the light gray of the background painting, which is getting deeper and blacker towards the inside in ever new layers of lines. Until Zekoff suddenly stops and brings the empty white space in the center into shape gracefully and abruptly.
He outlines the white void with a circling rhythm. His line swings. He sets the entire pictorial space vibrating and this bulges and noticeably opposes its right-angled borders.
