About
The small painting shows a landscape with houses under a red sky in which there is a sun disk with an integrated crescent moon. Animal and tree flank a lying, hugging couple, the figures stand out from the red surface with dark contours and appear as shone through. The embracing couple, the watchful animal, the city of Vitebsk, the sun with a crescent moon and the bright red color - they refer to a cycle of paintings, the Chagall Dedicated to the Song of Songs, a collection of love songs ascribed to King Solomon as part of the Bible, from 1957 to 1961.
