The bars, as if illuminated by moonlight, clear a dark space behind them, which remains indeterminate and therefore eerie. In The Last Unicorn, the unicorn is imprisoned by Mommy Fortuna for her Carnival of Curiosities. The deprivation of freedom is also to be understood in a figurative sense.
