About
In his latest series of works, Bennett devotes himself to the representation of abstracted heads and trees. Although the shapes continue to be created by removing the top layer of the plasterboard and even form a relief-like structure, since they are now not reclosed by inlay work, the surface treatment and, above all, the motifs point increasingly to the painterly. While in the previous series of works, the visible surfaces of the basic material were mostly left raw and uncovered, in most of the works they now appear painted over with broad brushstrokes in dark colors and form the almost monochrome background for the trees and heads reduced to their basic shapes. The fact that Bennett concentrates precisely on the stylized forms of heads and trees in his new compositions allows a comparison of the works with those of Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl group at the transition to abstraction. Mondrian found his way into the non-representational through the representation of trees, while the members of the De Stijl group devoted themselves to organic representations of the body before they radically departed from their natural model.
