Five Years of Painting brings together, for the first time, the major bodies of work created by Björn Weltbrandt Wallbaum between 2021 and 2026. Rather than presenting a chronological retrospective, the exhibition traces the gradual emergence of a distinctive visual language, revealing an artistic practice defined by continuity, transformation and sustained exploration.
Beginning with intimate landscapes and the now iconic palm paintings, Weltbrandt Wallbaum’s work evolves through reliefs, mirror pieces and increasingly autonomous pictorial structures. Throughout this development, painting shifts away from describing the visible world toward investigating the very conditions of perception. Repetition becomes a method of research, reduction a strategy of expansion, and colour a vehicle for memory, atmosphere and experience.
Seen together, the individual series reveal themselves not as isolated chapters but as interconnected stages within an evolving artistic vocabulary. Motifs migrate across different media, forms dissolve only to reappear elsewhere, and each body of work contributes to a larger visual dialogue. It is through these relationships that the internal coherence of the oeuvre becomes visible.
Five Years of Painting therefore documents more than five years of artistic production. It captures the moment in which a painter develops a language of his own—one that moves fluently between figuration and abstraction, intuition and structure, memory and perception.
